Few men ever consider their prostate until it starts to give them problems. Small in size and large in problems, this gland accounts for a staggering 2.7 million doctor visits in North America each year. Most men over 40 will experience some type of prostate problem that will affect their sexual and urinary function if they fail to adopt protective measures. The search for a natural remedy for prostatic hypertrophy has taken giant steps in the past few years. Saw Palmetto, Pygeum, Stinging Nettle, Flax Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil and zinc have all had their day in the sun. And rightfully so, because they are all effective to some degree. But some patients have more resistant problems and require even more assistance. Because my hospitals treat so many prostate patients with high PSA readings, indicative of prostate cancer, an urgent need became apparent: find a product that really helps the prostate patient. At one point, I thought I had found such a product, but the cost factors and the erratic supply (that company is now out of business) stimulated me to look even further. And that search led me to the various sterols, first found in the African potato and also found in many other nuts and seeds. It led me to quercetin, a member of the bioflavonoid family. It led me to boron, a lowly mineral no one talks too much about. Putting all this knowledge together created a product that was extremely effective for my patients. Other clinicians soon reported the same clinical effectiveness. Sterols and Sterolins European researchers have confirmed, in a study published in The Lancet, that plant sterols and sterolins are effective in eliminating the symptoms of the most common prostate problems. German urologists have been prescribing sterols and sterolins instead of chemical drugs for over 20 years with excellent results. All plants contain sterols and sterolins, as well as most fish and seafood. Nuts and seeds are some of the best food sources, explaining the folk remedy - pumpkin seeds. The Autoimmune Link There is a growing number of researchers that are of the opinion that prostate problems and even cancer may be the result of a misguided immune system that actually ends up attacking normal tissue of the body. This is called an autoimmune reaction and is well documented in such conditions as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriasis, etc. Sterols and sterolins offer relief of autoimmune symptoms, and particularly the symptoms of prostate problems, by modulating the immune system and stopping the unwarranted attack on normal cells. Slowly the inflammation and disturbances in normal tissue are reduced and the symptoms go away. Here are some studies that helped convince me: â¿¿Recent research indicates that plant-derived cholesterol analogues known as sterols and sterolins may have excellent health-promoting benefits. Human research indicates plant sterols and sterolins have important anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer and T-cell proliferation activity. They have adaptogenic properties which are very valuable.â¿¿ South African Journal of Science, v. 93, pp. 263-268, June 1999, Karl H. Pegel, Dept. of Chemistry and Applied Chemistry, Univ. of Natal, Durban â¿¿This randomized placebo controlled study involved 177 patients with enlarged prostate glands. The study was designed to assess the safety and efficacy of using beta-sitosterol in treating this condition. Statistically significant results over the placebo control were noted. Quality of life scores and prostate symptom scores showed statistically significant improvement. These results indicate that beta-sitosterol is, in fact, an effective treatment for individuals with prostate problems.â¿¿ British Jrnl of Urology, v. 80(3), pp. 427-432, Sept. 1997, Klippel, K.F; Hiltl, D.M.; Schipp, B.; German BPH Phyto Study Group â¿¿A plant-based fat has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate, colon and breast cancer cellsâ¿¿, say University of Buffalo researchers. The study, presented at the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology showed that the phytosterol, beta-sitosterol, reduced the number of cancer cells grown in a laboratory setting by 66 percent. It is known that beta-sitosterol reduces the levels of testosterone and certain enzymes that metabolize testosterone into more active forms. They also found that beta-sitosterol enhances an intracellular signaling system that tells cells not to divide. QUERCETIN - A Promising Newcomer Quercetin could be helpful in preventing prostate cancer, research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. indicates. â¿¿Our laboratory results showed quercetin blocks the hormone activity in androgen-responsive human prostate cancer cell lines,â¿¿ said Nianzeng Xing, a Mayo researcher who presented his findings at the recent meeting in New Orleans of the American Association for Cancer Research. â¿¿By blocking the androgen activity, the growth of prostate cancer cells can be prevented or stopped,â¿¿ he said. â¿¿Our study suggests quercetin may be a non-hormonal approach to accomplish that goal.â¿¿ Using other herbs from China traditionally used in prostate problems which I have known about previously, and which have excellent research to associate them with prostate cancer, I compounded the new formula, now known as ProstaSolve in 1999. Since that time, we have observed an ever-increasing number of patients who had dramatic drops in PSAâ¿¿s in as little as three weeks. As the word spread and others used it with equal results, the most common question was: What is the secret ingredient? Do you have hormones in there? The question is best answered by the lab tests which have been performed - infrared spectrographs and HPLC tests all completely verify lack of any contamination or addition of hormones or other chemicals. By its very nature, Prsostasol is loaded with phytoestrogens which will cause some symptoms similar to the use of female hormones. That is a trade-off, you must be the one to decide what is best for you. MAGNESIUM Magnesium is a mineral with many functions, one of which is relaxation of muscles. Most prostate patients are concerned about the flow of urine and magnesium may relax the bladder sphincter as well as the prostatic capsule as a whole. One of the other benefits of magnesium is its anti-platelet aggregation function, keeping the blood stream flowing freely. BORON Recent publication of research on this not-so-well-known mineral have uncovered an amazing link to prostate health. Few if any minerals, including zinc, can boast of as much solid information relating prostate health and the reduction of prostate cancer activity in vitro as can boron. Research indicates from 3 to 9 mg daily as the optimum dosage. NATTOKINASE Nattokinase is an enzyme derived from the fermented natto, a soy product consumed in Japan. It was found that this enzyme has remarkable clot dissolving properties and I felt that with the propensity for blood clots in cancer patients,it would add a benefit normally not found in products for cancer benefit. Proprietary Herbal Blend The herbs used are: Ellagic Acid, Reishi, Saw Palmetto, Curcuminoid Extract, Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) and Ginger. The prime purpose of all these herbs is as a synergistic base for the more active ingredients which might be more specific in reducing the PSA.
